Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Treatment
What Is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?
Also referred to as abnormal vaginal bleeding, abnormal uterine bleeding is considered to be bleeding that occurs outside of the typical pattern of a normal menstrual cycle, which typically occurs about every 28 days and lasts for about five to seven days.
It can include very heavy or very light periods, spotting between periods, bleeding after intercourse, or an absence of periods not caused by menopause, bleeding after menopause, absent periods, periods more often than every 21 days, and periods less often than every 35 days.
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Treatment at KLASS
Every woman is unique in her own cycle, with fluctuations occurring from month to month. Due to the normal changes that may be experienced, it can be difficult for a woman to determine what is normal and what is abnormal in terms of uterine bleeding.
Abnormal bleeding is one of the most common symptoms we treat at KLASS. Sometimes it takes the form of periods which come irregularly, or not at all. In other instances, women complain of periods that linger for more than a week or bleeding which occurs between periods or with intercourse.
We are experienced in diagnosing the causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding for our patients in Kenya and the neighboring areas. We offer patients effective treatment options—including advanced, minimally-invasive procedures—to restore freedom and quality of life.
There is no need to wonder if changes in your menstrual cycle are normal. Patients should schedule a visit with us if sudden or dramatic changes have occurred to the menstrual cycle. The extra checkup may confirm optimal health and will produce greater peace of mind than wondering if a gynecological problem has developed.
What May Cause Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?
Abnormal uterine bleeding is a sign that something unusual is going on in the body.
Often, abnormal bleeding occurs as a result of hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause, the months and years preceding menopause or the cessation of periods.
When assessing abnormal bleeding, we look for potential causes such as:
How is abnormal uterine bleeding evaluated?
To develop an accurate diagnosis, we perform one or more of the following diagnostic tests:
- A hysteroscopy may be performed to look inside our uterus.
- Transvaginal ultrasound to detect polyps, fibroids, and ovarian cysts.
- Pap smear to check for cervical cancer.
- Hormonal blood tests.
- Sonohysterogram to look for endometrial polyps and fibroids inside the uterus.
- Endometrial biopsy (collecting a small sample of the lining of the uterus).
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to view the reproductive organs.
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Treatment in Kenya
As a top gynecologist in Kenya, Prof. Rafique Parkar uses advanced diagnostics to help patients understand the causes of their abnormal bleeding to ensure they get the most effective treatment for optimal results.
Treatment options depend on the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, the severity of your symptoms, your age, and whether or not you wish to become pregnant in the future.
Your treatment is customized to your specific needs. In many cases of hormonal bleeding, the solution is hormonal: Women’s cycles can be restored using birth control pills, or other medications which will provoke a normal monthly flow.
When abnormal uterine bleeding is caused by fibroids or polyps, the resolution of bleeding often requires treatment of the underlying condition.
Endometrial ablation, a specialized procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus to stop abnormal uterine bleeding, can be performed.
Fortunately, we can remove most fibroids using minimally invasive techniques like hysteroscopic myomectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, or even laparoscopic hysterectomy if necessary.
At KLASS, We provide solutions for women with abnormal bleeding. Whether you are bothered by your symptoms, or simply wish to know if your bleeding pattern is normal, our team is happy to help. Using the latest technologies and methods, we can deliver exceptional care to women of all ages.
