What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopic Surgery, is a modern surgical technique in which operations are performed through small incisions, as opposed to the larger incisions used in traditional surgical techniques (open surgery : Laparotomy). The doctor can observe and perform a variety of procedures on a woman’s reproductive organs (the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes). Since the surgeon uses instruments that fit into a narrow tube called a cannula, only a small incision is necessary.
It allows a surgeon to clearly examine magnified views of the organs within the abdominal cavity without the need for large, ugly & cosmetically unacceptable scars. It is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.
BETTER PATIENT RESULTS.
Why Laparoscopic Surgery?
A laparoscopy ( lapar = abdomen, scopy = to view ) may be performed to access the abdomen and its organs for tumors and other lesions, injuries, intra-abdominal bleeding, infections, unexplained abdominal pain, obstructions, or other conditions, particularly when another type of examination such as physical examination, X-ray, or CT scan is not conclusive. Laparoscopy may be used to determine the stage of cancer/spread to the other abdominal cavities & organs. It may also be used to evaluate abdominal trauma, including the depth and location of the injury. Gynecologic laparoscopy may be used to assess pelvic pain, problems of heavy periods or infertility (evaluation of the fallopian tubes), ovarian cysts, fibroids, or prolapse, and related incontinence (urinary or fecal) issues.

What are the advantages of Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopy can be less stressful for the patient and can often be done without needing to stay overnight in the hospital. There are several advantages to laparoscopic surgery versus a traditional open procedure (Laparotomy):
- Fewer complications provided the procedure is performed by a competent and adequately trained surgeon.
-
Reduced blood loss, thereby avoiding blood transfusions.
-
Lower rate of infection, less internal scar tissue formation (adhesions) after surgery.
-
Faster recovery – depending on the kind of surgery, patients may be able to return home a few hours after the operation, or after a brief stay in the hospital.
-
Reduced pain and discomfort after the operation – The smaller incisions used in laparoscopy reduces pain. Most patients feel a little soreness from the incisions, which heal within a few days.
-
Significantly smaller scars that are cosmetically acceptable.
-
Better visualization, magnification of pathology, and access for the surgeon.
Performing surgery laparoscopically greatly reduces the chance of forming internal scar tissue (adhesions) after surgery.
In some people, these adhesions can cause pain, and in 1-3% of people, may lead to intestinal obstruction at some point in their lives.
Fewer adhesions are formed after laparoscopic surgery because no sponges or retractors are needed, and the internal tissues are not dried by exposure to room air.
From the perspective of the surgeon, many types of surgery are actually easier to do laparoscopically because the internal areas of interest are magnified and shown on a large TV screen.
Some conditions diagnosed and treated using laparoscopy include:
- Endometriosis
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome ( PCOS )
- Ovarian cysts ( removal of the cyst )
- Ectopic pregnancies
- Abnormal bleeding
- Fibroids ( myomectomy )
- Prolapse & pelvic floor problems
- Exploratory surgery for possible infertility causes
- Hysterectomy ( Removal of the Uterus )
- Gallbladder disease and gallstones
- Hernias
- Reflux
- Weight loss procedures
