FERTILITY EVALUATION

What is Fertility Evaluation?

Fertility evaluation is a comprehensive medical assessment performed when a couple has difficulty conceiving after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse (or after 6 months if the woman is over 35). It involves a series of tests and consultations aimed at identifying potential causes of infertility in both partners. This evaluation helps determine the best course of treatment to improve the chances of pregnancy.

Fertility Evaluation Treatment

The treatment approach depends on the cause identified during evaluation. Common options include:

  • Ovulation induction with medications (e.g., Clomiphene, Letrozole)

  • Hormonal treatments for conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders

  • Surgical interventions for structural abnormalities (e.g., fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes)

  • Lifestyle changes such as weight management and stopping smoking

  • Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like:

    • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

    • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

    • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

Counseling and psychological support are also offered as part of comprehensive fertility care.

How Fertility Evaluation is Performed

For Women:

  • Medical history and physical exam

  • Hormonal blood tests (FSH, LH, AMH, TSH, prolactin, etc.)

  • Ultrasound to assess ovaries and uterus

  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG) – to check fallopian tubes

  • Laparoscopy or hysteroscopy if needed

For Men:

  • Semen analysis – to assess sperm count, motility, and shape

  • Hormone tests

  • Scrotal ultrasound – to detect varicocele or other issues

  • Genetic testing – in some cases

Risks of Not Undergoing Fertility Evaluation

  • Delayed diagnosis of treatable conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, or low sperm count

  • Reduced chances of successful conception, especially as age increases

  • Increased emotional stress and frustration from continued unsuccessful attempts

  • Missed opportunity for early intervention or assisted reproduction

  • Potential worsening of untreated reproductive or hormonal disorders

  • Higher risk of miscarriage or pregnancy complications without proper pre-conception care
